Born in 1985, James Decent grew up in Sheffield bordering the Peak District. From an early age he always created artwork that reflected the contrasting landscapes of countryside and city. His art was exhibited in numerous exhibitions and competitions in the South Yorkshire region. His skill as a draftsman led him to study architecture in Nottingham and London where he gained prizes for his design from the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects and was nominated for the RIBA President's Medal.
Although his art features some architectural elements, his primary interest is light and colour. The endless exploration of its portrayal in various painted mediums is an on-going endeavour. Inspired by the techniques of artists John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and William Nicholson, James is interested in resonating a contemporary yet timeless ambience, connecting with people and places.
He is also director of London-based architecture practice Decent Goodfellow Architects.
